GTC players bring home another trophy

Only a few weeks ago Pip Wallbank and Nikki Withers were battling it out to become GTC’s Ladies Winter Singles Champion. But on Saturday, they put their rivalry aside and paired up to beat Delainey Ackerman and Judith Loffhagen from Ealing Lawn Tennis Club to win the Middlesex Winter Postal Knockout 2022 Womens Doubles final, 6-2, 6-0.

Playing away at Virgin Active ChIswick Riverside was a little more formal than a home tournament, with an umpire and line judge and Middlesex Tennis’ Brenda Stewart to present the trophies.

Congratulations on a great win!

Good Friday fun tennis for all the family!

On one of the warmest Good Friday’s anyone could remember, GTC members and their families made the most of the sunshine in a series of friendly but competitive matches on our six beautifully maintained artificial grass courts.

In an extremely close Ladies Doubles tournament every pair won at least one match but congratulations to Champions, Liz and Philippa, closely followed by Gilpin and Jackie.

A new format of double elimination in both Main and Plate Events led to an endless stream of winners and, in the final event of the day, parents took on children for a friendly but competitive game of Chocolate Pudding followed by Doubles Match Play for all levels.

No Easter event would be complete without an egg hunt and, sure enough, players young and old discovered almost 100 small eggs kindly left by the Easter Bunny around our spacious grounds.

Great Wins on GTC Winter Finals Day

There were some hard-fought matches and brilliant tennis at GTC Winter Finals Day, with members turning out in force to support on a wonderfully sunny day.

In the Ladies Singles, Nikki looked like she would win the trophy after taking the first set 6-2 with a flawless display. However, Pip, who has won for the last 5 years in a row and 11 times in total, wasn’t going to give up her crown without a fight. Sure enough, she took the next two sets in a close match to the end.

Some great tennis in the Mens Singles too, with Ian serving at 4-3 up in the first set, but Rhodri breaking back and ending with a convincing win.

In the Ladies Doubles, Roubina and Marina took sweet revenge on Bridget and Tamlyn who beat them in last Summer’s Ladies Vets Doubles and, in the Mens Doubles, Ian and Graham took the title for the 3rd time in a row, beating Vatche & Henrik.

Other worthy winners on the day were Marian and Matthew in the Mixed Doubles Plate, Katy and Alison in the Ladies Doubles Plate, and Adam and Peter in the Mens Doubles Plate. GTC members were also treated to a great ladder match between Gerry (winner of the Men Singles Plate) and Lauren (Invitation Singles Winner) which Gerry won 6-4, 6-2.

Next up: GTC Open Day on Sunday, 24 April – come and meet our members, try some social play on our six fantastic all-weather courts, and give table tennis, yoga and pilates a go while you’re here!

GTC Ladies are Middlesex Winter Cup winners

Gunnersbury Triangle Club Ladies have triumphed in the Middlesex Winter Cup, beating Finchley Manor (5-3) in the final of the Division 2 competition.

Throughout the Winter, our team played in all weathers against tough opposition to reach last Sunday’s final. At last, there was a blue sky and gentle breeze as the GTC team showed off their best tennis to a supportive home crowd.

Big congratulations to all those who played for GTC in Sunday’s final (Pip, Nikki, Katya, Cat, Roubina and Bridget) and to those who played in earlier rounds and contributed so much to the team’s success (Julie, Lydia, Polly and Rikke).

Summer Finals Day more competitive than ever!

This year’s Summer Championship finalists played some of the most keenly contested matches ever seen on a finals day at Gunnersbury Triangle Club. With matches going to three sets and plenty of tie breaks, members were treated to a fantastic day of tennis. A huge thank you goes to our sponsor, Winkworth, who funded all the prizes.

Many of the Club’s biggest hitters were in action, and it was good to see new members among the finalists as well as some very talented junior members. Tennis at GTC clearly has a fantastic future.

It’s a great time to join our friendly Club as the cost of tennis membership fell to 40% of full-year subscriptions on October 1. That means adult membership lasting until the end of March 2022 costs just £160, and a family package is £290. You can expect a warm welcome!

Worthy winners of Paul Busfield Memorial Cup!

Sixteen pairs of Gunnersbury Triangle Club players battled their way through at least four rounds of FAST4Tennis on Sunday, with worthy winners Joy and Cathal lifting the Paul Busfield Memorial Cup at the end of a hectic afternoon.

The rapid format (first to 4 games, 5-point tie-breaker at 4 all) was new to some players, and remembering to play service lets even if balls dribbled over the net was quite a challenge.

Head coach, Debbie, ensured that pairs were well balanced for skills, experience and sense of humour, so there were plenty of close matches. Everyone agreed that Paul Busfield – an active member and volunteer at GTC – would have been delighted with the format and the results.

Florence and Sue were finalists for the Cup, presented by Paul’s sister, Lynn. The consolation event was won by Wiebke and Trevor, with Isabel and Jo the other consolation finalists.

The Paul Busfield Cup is one of many competitive but fun events run at GTC during the year. Whether you’re looking for team tennis or social play, new members of all ages and experience are always welcome at one of West London’s friendliest tennis clubs.
