We’re in the Christmas spirit!

We had a great turn out for the Christmas adult tournament despite the rain. And we were delighted to see so many new members at the event.  Congratulations to Donna, Andrew, Seb, Henrik, Francesco and Vijay.

Then it was time for some of our younger members to show the adults how it’s done with some competitive team tennis. Congratulations to all the juniors from all Friday groups taking part in match play week. The result – an honourable draw!

Spotlight on GTC snooker legends

Big congratulations to GTC snooker members, Simon and Marcos, who have been competing in the prestigious 900 Snooker Legends Season 2, at The Crucible in Reading. Marcos narrowly lost in the final of his section this week, and Simon – one of the youngest players to qualify – missed a place on finals day of his section by just 1 point.

Some of our other snooker legends have battled it out on GTC’s own top quality tables, with Paul “The Magician” winning the Gunnersbury Open title for the third year in succession, in a fast, tight match over five frames against “Hurricane” Henrik. In a tense showdown between the best of the first-round losers, Gerry “The Driver” beat James “Bingo Baller” to win the third annual Gunnersbury Open Plate.

“The Gunnersbury Snooker section is thriving,” says Alfred, the Open tournament director. “We have players of a very high standard, notably Simon who brought a state-of-the-art, heated table to the club, and with our new LED lighting and and recent re-clothing of the tables, we offer a professionally-equipped snooker room and welcoming environment for players of all abilities.”

What a scorcher on Summer Finals Day!

It was another scorcher for this year’s Summer Finals Day but, once again, some of the Club’s finest players rose to the challenge and gave us some nail-biting matches, several going the distance. It was particularly exciting to see younger players challenging past winners. Congratulations to all those who reached the Finals and many thanks for giving us such an entertaining day of tennis.

Rosebowl competitors beat the heat!

On the hottest day of 2023, 12 pairs of GTC members took to the courts in the hope of winning the coveted Chittenden Rosebowl – a trophy celebrating the life of the Club’s founder, Henry Chittenden. Uniquely among all the Club’s tournaments, couples competing for the Rosebowl are carefully matched so that everyone stands an equal chance of adding their name to the illustrious roll call of previous winners.

It was great to see plenty of new members as well as familiar faces and, this year, it was Jane and Aadil who fought off the competition – and the heat – and Sue and Fabrice who were runners up. The consolation prize went to Heidi and Maciej.

Well done to everyone who took part and made sure it was another memorable day at the Club.

Wimbledon tennis finals come to W3

There were some obvious similarities between the Wimbledon finals held in SW19 and W3 last weekend. Both tournaments were in London, both were superbly organised, both saw some brilliant tennis, and both had big trophies. Shame about the prize money!

Congratulations to our Wimbledon Tournament winners Lydia and Aidan, and Finalists Tina and Aadil, and to our plate winners Florence and Andrew, and Finalists Gwen and Hal – and, of course, to Carlos and Marketa at the other tournament!

Paul Busfield Memorial Celebration Tournament

Sixteen pairs braved the hot weather on June 25 to take part in the 5th annual tournament in memory of Paul Busfield and to celebrate his life at the Club he loved. A strong breeze and plenty of rests in the shade with watermelon and ice cream helped keep players cool as pairs edged their way to the finals or the bar, depending on performance!

Congratulations to trophy winners, Wiebke and Bridget, and runners up Lizzie and Charlie, and to Florence and Fernando who won the Glitter Ball Competition, and runners up, Jane and Andrew.

A huge thank you to Debbie and Jane for organising, Trevor for making the amazing ‘Glitter Ball’, and all participants and cake and snack makers who helped make it such a friendly and meaningful event.

What an amazing day!

We raised  over £2400 for Cancer Research UK at our 2nd Memorial Celebration Day – exceeding even our wildest hopes! We are so grateful to everyone for being so generous and, of course, to Debbie and her team for their wonderful organisation.

The sun shone on the sports events – speed serving, tennis, table tennis and boules – and congratulations to the Red Team and all the individual winners. The cake baking competitions were a great success, and sales of donated goods, plants and photos helped boost our fundraising.

Come along to our 2nd Memorial Celebration Tennis Event in aid of Cancer Research UK on Sunday, 14 May 2023.  There will be tennis, raffle and tombola together with sports and plant stalls … and more. There’s still time to enter for adult and junior tennis and baking competitions, and buy raffle tickets for some great prizes!

Last year we were so grateful to all the generous people who helped us raise over £1500 for this fantastic charity and we hope we can do the same this year. Donations please at: https://www.justgiving.com/page/gunnersbury-triangle-sports-club-1681756149544?newPage=true  Thank you!

Welcome to all our New Members!

A warm welcome to all our new members who joined on Open Day – we hope you enjoyed the day and look forward to seeing you at the Club!

After a wet start to Open Day, we were delighted to see so many members and visitors arrive as soon as the sun came out. After a thrilling GTC ladies NFL team win against Hackney and a highly competitive Fastest Serve Competition, the courts soon filled up for social tennis and free coaching for all ages. There were taster sessions for tennis fitness and salsa classes that are starting soon, and table tennis and snooker tables were in great demand.

As usual, there was no shortage of friendly and talented members who welcomed guests, helped with coaching, fired up the BBQ and brought delicious cakes, quiches and salads for everyone to enjoy.
