Wimbledon tennis finals come to W3

There were some obvious similarities between the Wimbledon finals held in SW19 and W3 last weekend. Both tournaments were in London, both were superbly organised, both saw some brilliant tennis, and both had big trophies. Shame about the prize money!

Congratulations to our Wimbledon Tournament winners Lydia and Aidan, and Finalists Tina and Aadil, and to our plate winners Florence and Andrew, and Finalists Gwen and Hal – and, of course, to Carlos and Marketa at the other tournament!

Paul Busfield Memorial Celebration Tournament

Sixteen pairs braved the hot weather on June 25 to take part in the 5th annual tournament in memory of Paul Busfield and to celebrate his life at the Club he loved. A strong breeze and plenty of rests in the shade with watermelon and ice cream helped keep players cool as pairs edged their way to the finals or the bar, depending on performance!

Congratulations to trophy winners, Wiebke and Bridget, and runners up Lizzie and Charlie, and to Florence and Fernando who won the Glitter Ball Competition, and runners up, Jane and Andrew.

A huge thank you to Debbie and Jane for organising, Trevor for making the amazing ‘Glitter Ball’, and all participants and cake and snack makers who helped make it such a friendly and meaningful event.

What an amazing day!

We raised  over £2400 for Cancer Research UK at our 2nd Memorial Celebration Day – exceeding even our wildest hopes! We are so grateful to everyone for being so generous and, of course, to Debbie and her team for their wonderful organisation.

The sun shone on the sports events – speed serving, tennis, table tennis and boules – and congratulations to the Red Team and all the individual winners. The cake baking competitions were a great success, and sales of donated goods, plants and photos helped boost our fundraising.

There were taster sessions for tennis fitness and salsa classes that are starting soon, and table tennis and snooker tables were in great demand.

Happy Easter!

It was Easter Eggs all round for those who took part in our annual Good Friday Tournament! Thirty two players of all standards took to the courts for the adult event, played under blue skies in warm sunshine. Every match was as competitive as it was unpredictable and, in the finals, a single point separated winners and runners up in the ‘first to 5’ tie breaks.

For our younger members, it was Family Fun time, with some great games, fab rallies and fun matches. The GTC Easter Bunny had hidden over 50 eggs and sweets around the grounds and the children rushed tirelessly around at the end of the session whilst parents enjoyed some social tennis.

Winter finalists battle the elements

There was sun and lots of wind for Winter Finals Day – but at least it didn’t rain! Competitors took on the elements as well as each other in some terrific matches.

In the Invitation Singles it was great to see Hamza and Jane participate in their first finals day and give us a very entertaining 3 set match. Pip won the first set in the Ladies Singles but Cat fought hard in the second. However, Pip just doesn’t give up and made it her 7th win in a row and 12 times in total.

In the Mens Singles, Rhodri and Ian defied the wind and played some superb tennis, with Rhodri retaining his trophy.

Ana and Peter triumphed in the Mixed Doubles Plate, Ian and Graham in the Men’s Doubles, and Nikki and Claire in the Ladies Doubles.

The last match of the day was the Mixed Doubles, and Nikki & Rhodri, the holders, were on blistering form to win again. Not long now until the Summer Champs when there’ll be lots more competitive tennis – hopefully in the sunshine!

New season, great events!

There’s a packed schedule of tennis tournaments and social events at GTC in the months ahead, with something for every age and standard.

As well as our ever-popular round robin, mixed doubles ‘American’ tournaments and Family Fun events, GTC members will be competing in the national Road to Wimbledon challenge for the chance to play on the world famous, SW19 courts. Other highlights will include our Winter Finals Day (March 25), Good Friday (April 7), and Paul Busfield Memorial (June 25) tournaments.

April 23 is Open Day when we welcome current and potential new members to play on our six fantastic all-weather tennis courts, enjoy free coaching and try the other sports we offer at GTC – table tennis, snooker and karate. With mouth-watering BBQ, salads, tarts and cakes, it’s not to be missed.

On May 14, we’ll be holding our second Memorial Celebration Tennis Event in aid of Cancer Research UK – last year, we raised over £1500 for this wonderful charity whose work has made a difference to so many lives. Following the outstanding success of our Mens and Ladies tennis teams last year, we are delighted that our members will once again represent GTC in the Middlesex leagues this season. Team trials until early April. There is also plenty of social tennis to enjoy including Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening club sessions.
